Veins – Guangzhou, China, 2026
Originally created in marble, Georg Scheele’s sculpture Veins was reinterpreted as a monumental stainless-steel work for a permanent public installation at The Green Shore in Guangzhou, China.
Its flowing, interconnected lines evoke the hidden structures that connect people and their lives. The title Veins refers to the invisible bonds between generations, memories, roots, time and human relationships. The transformation from marble into stainless steel gives the sculpture a new presence. Its reflective surface responds continuously to light, architecture and movement, while the open spaces between its forms create a sense of weightlessness.
Despite its monumental scale, the work retains the delicacy and fluidity characteristic of Georg Scheele’s sculptural language. Veins demonstrates how an artistic idea developed through hand-carved marble can evolve into a contemporary landmark for architecture and public space.

A Monument to Freedom – Paris, 2025
On 10 May 2025, a permanent public sculpture by Georg Scheele was inaugurated in Villeneuve-la-Garenne in the Paris metropolitan region. Commissioned in cooperation with the City of Villeneuve-la-Garenne and the Paris-based art organisation Quai 36, the work commemorates the abolition of slavery and the universal struggle for freedom.
Its flowing, intertwined forms represent the connecting thread of abolition, bringing together the many individual stories shaped by this painful chapter of history. The sculpture creates a symbolic bridge between past, present and future.
Rather than depicting a historical event literally, Georg Scheele translates remembrance, liberation and human connection into an abstract sculptural language. The spaces between the forms are as significant as the material itself: they open the work to light, movement and personal reflection.
Installed in the heart of the city, the sculpture provides a lasting place of remembrance, contemplation and hope. It demonstrates how contemporary art can preserve collective memory while creating new connections between history, people and generations.

Selected Earlier Works
Georg Scheele’s earlier works trace the development of a sculptural language shaped by stone, movement and the search for inner clarity. After working in the marble quarries of Carrara in 1984, he initially created sculptures that combined figurative elements with increasingly abstract forms.
Following his move to Monchique, Portugal, in the early 1990s, his work became fully abstract. Surrounded by the rugged landscape of the Algarve, he began transforming heavy blocks of white and pink marble into flowing curves, intertwined paths and delicate loops.
Over the years, his sculptures became more complex, lighter and technically more daring. Circular structures and forms related to the Möbius strip emerged as recurring elements. They suggest continuous movement without a clear beginning or end, while the empty spaces within the sculptures become an essential part of the work.
Rather than treating emptiness as absence, Scheele understands it as the space from which form emerges and into which it eventually returns. His sculptures explore the tension between mass and openness, stability and movement, permanence and transformation.
Created largely by hand, these earlier works reveal an exceptional understanding of marble and its physical limits. They laid the foundation for Georg Scheele’s later monumental commissions and for a body of work represented in international galleries, exhibitions and collections.
As a result, my sculptures have become increasingly complex, thinner, and more delicate over the years, existing in a continuous and self-contained cycle. The Möbius strip often forms the basis of this.
However, since I still create almost everything by hand, I can only produce a limited number of sculptures each year. For this reason, I now primarily focus on commissioned works. Ordering a sculpture has the great advantage that I can tailor the desired piece to the customer’s wishes regarding size, color, and the specific location.
Customers often send me photos of the site. I then create photo montages with the corresponding ideas, allowing the client to gain a very good impression of which sculpture, in what size, will ultimately fit best.
